A Case of Extramedullary Plasmacytoma from the Middle Turbinate

|
Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare soft tissue malignancy composed of plasma cells. This tumor may be primary or secondary to the generalized multiple myeloma. Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) represent up to 4% of nonepithelial lesions of the upper respiratory tract. On initial presentations, they must be differentiated from multiple myeloma. If histologic diagnosis of plasmacytoma is confirmed, all screening tests to rule out multiple myeloma is neccesary before initial treatment and during follow-up period. At first, EMPs are frequently seen as masses or swelling, accompanied by nasal or pharyngeal symptoms. The most frequently involved sites are the nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, and nasopharynx, in the decreasing order. EMPs are of special interest to otolaryngologists, because the majority of these unusual tumors are present in soft tissues of the head and neck. We report, with a review of literature, a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma from the middle turbinate in a 61 yearold male patient.
